The best method to lose weight is to master the common denominator between all weight loss.
The common denominator is a negative calorie balance.
A negative calorie balance is when you expend more calories than you take in.
You can do this by:
- Increasing exercise
- Increasing non-exercise physical activity (i.e gardening, labor work, etc)
- Increasing your metabolism via nutrition manipulation or drugs
- Eating less
- Wiring your mouth shut
- And probably some other more aggressive strategies…
So, what is the best method to lose weight?
It really depends on you.
I’ve worked with people who lost weight by switching their medications. They worked with their doctor to do it safely.
Some lost weight by walking more. They walked to and from work every day and lost 15 pounds in 3 months.
Some folks lost weight by switching up their workouts and adding in higher intensities or more time.
I’m a nutrition coach, so a lot of my focus surrounds food. Eating less is often a strategy used but not the only way. Eating less can mean cutting out foods or adding more (i.e. non-starchy veggies). Sometimes simply keeping a journal can be a game changer as it helps people be aware of how much they take in.
The best method to lose weight is to do what works for you to achieve a negative calorie balance. This can be a combination of eating less, moving more, and exercise. It could also be simply moving more. True mastery of the best method is to realize that the method changes depending on the situation.
